Exhibition One Museum One Neighborhood - MEMORIES OF THE INVASION

MEMORIES OF THE INVASION, is the interpretation of Mariana Duarte Santos, of the work The city of Lisbon elects its first council | Suffrage, by Veloso Salgado (MC.PIN.0368 -1913)
“The second mural was based on the painting "The city of Lisbon elects its first council" (also known as "O Sufrágio") by Veloso Salgado and portrays one of the residents who was chosen to be represented by the surveyed population, D. Ausenda.
Before the Revolution, houses in this neighborhood were being built for state officials. On May 2, 1974, with the houses still unfinished, the neighborhood was occupied by people who had no other place to live and who struggled a lot to have their home.
These families lived in these conditions for years, always afraid of losing the house they had occupied.
In addition to representing one of the many people who originally occupied the neighborhood and who still live here, I chose to reproduce newspaper articles referring to the 25th of April and the 2nd of May 1974 and I also represented some old photographs of the neighborhood that I managed to collect from of some residents. Mariana Duarte Santos”
